Backlog: Post-Summer Update

Happy… post-summer update? The heat has died down outside, but even as the government is shut down (DAY 21, oof) the Senate is still churning away.

I finally tracked down links to the two videos I filmed and produced – and their offices published, the key factor – this summer. I can only share what the offices have posted, so I can’t feature most of the work I create. It’s a shame, too; I’ve been creating some of the best work I’ve ever done, in both stills and video.

Here’s a video that I filmed for Senator Angela Alsobrooks at a town hall in Frederick, MD. I shot this with a vertical-only directive, which is tricky when you’re filming on a horizontal format camera. (I’ve devised a plan to make custom frame lines for the next time I’m filming vertical-only.) But considering the limitations, I managed to capture all the pieces I needed with a single camera, and no idea what she was going to talk about in advance.

And this Coast Guard birthday celebration for Senator Dan Sullivan was also an adventure. We went in with one plan, and that quickly turned into a new approach on the fly. I love the opening shot of walking into the celebration space, I only had one opportunity to get it right and I was really excited that it worked. Also, I filmed this not long after returning from some major time off due to an unfortunate incident with a baseball and my skull (yes, at work; filming for the Congressional Baseball Game), and sitting directly under the Coast Guard members performing their silent routine was a little… stressful. Overall though, there’s some really nice moments in here.

I wish I could share some images, but maybe a brief roundup of some highlights the last few months would suffice? I’ve photographed an irate Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr during a 3 hour hearing, Bill Nye and the Teamsters’ President Sean O’Brien, cute kids witnessing their dads give confirmation testimony, Lupita Nyong’o and Mandy Moore at a health round table, protestors shouting behind Russ Vought, kind interns for my portrait studio training, Pam Bondi giving her signature sneer while not answering questions, and lots of Senators gesticulating or brandishing posters (my favorite being “76 JABS!” at the Kennedy hearing) as they grill witnesses, work on nominations, and do the business of legislating.
